The Northeast Corner and the Case for Morning Light
In Vastu Shastra the northeast — Ishanya — is treated as the lightest quarter of a building. It is where first light arrives, and the tradition asks that it be kept open, clean, uncluttered, and comparatively low. Heavy storage, clutter, and large closed furniture are traditionally placed toward the southwest instead.
You can take this literally or you can take it as an observation about how buildings and bodies work. Either way it gives you something concrete to do, which is the part I care about.
Finding yours
Open the compass app on your phone. Stand in the rough center of your home and note which corner sits toward the northeast. Phone compasses are imprecise and that is fine — we are working with a quarter of a home, not a surveying line.
Now go stand in that corner and look at it. In most homes I visit it is holding exactly what the tradition asks it not to: the heaviest thing in the house, or the pile nobody wants to sort.
What to actually do
Lighten it. Not empty it — lighten it. Take out the heaviest single object and move it toward the southwest side of the same room or the home. Clear the floor if you can. Clean the window if there is one, which sounds almost too simple to mention, and which changes that corner more than anything else on this list.
Then give it something alive or something bright: a plant, a bowl of water you change regularly, a lamp, a small open shelf with almost nothing on it. Vastu associates this quarter with water and with clarity. A clean, uncluttered, gently lit corner reads that way to the body regardless of the framework.
If your northeast is a closet, a bathroom, or your neighbor's wall — which happens constantly in apartments — do the version you can. Keep that closet tidier than the others. Keep that bathroom well ventilated and the surfaces clear. This is guidance, not a rule you are failing.
The broader principle
Heavy things toward the southwest and west. Light, open, and used-daily things toward the northeast and east. If you remember nothing else from this piece, that single sentence will carry you through most placement questions in a home.
Lighten the northeast quarter of your home by one object and one cleaning.
- Use your phone compass from the center of your home to find the northeast quarter.
- Remove the single heaviest object there and relocate it toward the southwest side.
- Clean the floor, the window, or the surface in that corner.
- Place one light, living, or luminous thing there and leave the rest of the corner open.
