What does a Feng Shui consultant do?

A Feng Shui consultant reads how energy moves through a space — entrances, sightlines, furniture placement, light and clutter — usually mapping the bagua from the entrance. They then recommend practical changes to placement, use and flow. Reputable practitioners do not require you to buy objects.

What I look at

What gets read

The approach and the entry

How you arrive, what you see first, and whether the way in is clear or obstructed.

The bagua over your plan

Eight sectors mapped from the entrance, each corresponding to an area of life, plus the centre.

Command position

Where the bed, the desk and the stove sit relative to the door. The oldest and most reliable rule in the tradition.

Flow and obstruction

Where movement runs straight through, where it pools, and where it is blocked by something nobody has questioned in years.

The five elements in balance

Wood, fire, earth, metal and water — read through material, colour and shape, and adjusted with what a room already has.

The rooms you avoid

Every home has one. It is diagnostic, and it is usually where the useful work is.

The map

Eight sectors and a centre

In a consultation, this map is considered alongside your floor plan, entrance and everyday use of each room. It gives us a shared starting point for discussing placement and flow.

Most of what improves a room is subtraction, not addition.

If a consultant's recommendations all require purchases, that is worth noticing.

Questions

Common questions

What is the difference between Feng Shui and Vastu?
Both read the relationship between a building and the people in it, but they come from different traditions and use different instruments. Vastu comes from India and works from fixed cardinal directions and a nine-sector grid. Feng Shui comes from China and reads the flow of energy through a space, often mapped from the entrance. They agree more often than they disagree.
Do I need to buy crystals, fountains, or figurines?
Not automatically. We start with practical changes such as clearing a path, opening a window, or moving a chair. If an item could help, I explain why, whether something you own would work, and the price of any purchase before you decide.
Can Feng Shui be done on an apartment or a rental?
Yes. Feng Shui is largely about placement and flow, both of which a renter controls. I have never given a renter a recommendation that required a landlord's permission.
How do you consult remotely?
A floor plan, a compass reading from your phone, photographs or a walkthrough video of each room, and a conversation about which rooms you use, avoid, sleep badly in, or cannot settle in. That last conversation is often the most informative part.
How long before I notice anything?
I will not promise you a result or a timeline. What clients most often report, and what I would expect, is that a space starts to feel easier to be in — they stop avoiding a room, or they sleep better in a bed that has moved. Treat that as the measure, not a change in fortune.

Start with the room you avoid

There is almost always one. It is usually the most useful place to begin.
